The new mayor and council met and appointed the different department heads: Street and Board of Health, T.V. Kent and G.W. Prescott; Light and Water, J.H. Rowland and I.R. Tanner; Finance, J. H. Rowland and R. B. Bryan; Clerk and Treasurer, R. L. Kent; Chief of Police, L.J. Claxton; Night Police, F.C. Lord; Electricians, Ross and Vanlandingham.
One among the neatest resorts in the city is the Johnson Ice Cream Parlor, conducted by Messrs. Samps and Cleo Johnson located in the Vivola building. Holmes Hines is now employed at Brinson's Drug Store. Mr. Jim D. Bush is now salesman with the Peoples Hardware Co. and Shellman "Red" Martin is a salesman at Flanders Drugs. Jeronie Downs left Flanders Drug store and is now a saleman at Tanner & Kent Furniture. Hatcher & Tanner sold out their grocery business. Mr. Hatcher now runs a farm out near Lynnhurst and Mr. Tanner will conduct an automibile agency.
Mr. Bicelle Price of R.F.D. 3 Wrightsville won the pure bred Berkshire boar offered by the Central of Georgia Railway, as a prize for the Boys Corn Clubs contest for Johnson County. He made so much corn on his acre, he will have plenty of feed for a number of pigs and this will enable him to successfully start raising hogs.
Mrs. Gordon Brantley is teaching kindergarten in her home on West College street. Incumbent Tax Receiver N.B. Miller announces for re-election. Prof. G.V. Anderson principal at Warthen College left for a job in Gainsville, Ga. at Riverside Military Academy.
A marriage which was quite a surprise to many was that of Miss Bessie Patterson and Mr. J. Rush Moorman at the home of W.L. Rawls on Dec. 30th. She is a daughter of W.M. Patterson and Mr. Moorman is a brother of Mrs. W. T. Johnson. On Wednesday afternoon Mr. H.H. Lake and Miss Blanche Wilson were married at the methodist parsonage.
In Kite news Mr. William Caraway who was visiting his son, M.C. Caraway, fell while walking and died suddenly from heart failure. He was buried at Gumlog. On Sunday afternoon Miss Mamie Ricks of Lyons and Mr. Henry Jackson of Kite were married.
Baptist services were to be held at the court house but were moved to the Christian church. The work of tearing away the wooden structure of a Wrightsville landmark has begun. The Baptist church was first built in 1891. The late Stephen McWhorter was contractor and builder and were strongly identified with the church. George Francis was employed in building the church and now has the contract for removing and rebuilding it again for the trustees of Beulah church near Donovan. He with his corps of workmen are now tearing down the church which was once considered the best built in the city. The removal of the steeple and bellfry is about completed.
During its erection some 23 years ago the tragic death of young Davis of Harrison who while attempting to ascend to the top of the steeple by the ropes and pulleys, fell when halfway up and was killed. As soon as the work of removing the building is complete, the erection of the new brick church will begin.
