Judge Ben Hill Moye, born May 24,1885, died at his home on South Marcus Street Friday night about 10pm following a two week illness. He had a cold for several days preventing him from holding City Court, but came on Tuesday the 12th, very feeble, and was persuaded to go back home. On the 14th his condition worsened. Dr. T. L. Harris, his father-in-law stated the Judge suffered a stroke which made him unconscious which he never recovered. His brother-in-law, Dr. R. Lamar Harris of Augusta and two brothers, Dr. L. G. Moye of Adrian and Dr. T. R. Moye of Vienna all worked to make him better.
He was a son of Mr. & Mrs. Robert J. Moye. His mother was with him till the end. He was married to Mary Sallie Harris who bore him ten children, eight which are living. He had four brothers, R. T., Dr. T. R., Edward L. and Dr. L. G. Moye. Two sisters, Mrs. W. B. Daniel and Mrs. G. A. Battle.
He came to Wrightsville as a lad and studied law under Judge J. L. Kent and was his law partner for 5 years. Moye represented Johnson in the legislature. He was Solicitor of City Court one term. Also chairman of the Democratic Executive Committee of the county and a Wrightsville District School Board of Trustees and member of the Christian Church. He had announced running for Congress this next term. He was a Mason, an Odd Fellow and a member of Wrightsville No. 107 K. K. K.
Services were at the Christian Church by Rev. E. N. Anthony. More than 100 cars followed the hearse to Westview. Just preceding the sermon a delegation of the Klan from No. 107 as shown on their caps numbering 26, marched bearing a large cross of flowers, a tribute carrying the card of the Wrightsville K. K. K.
Pall bearers were W. M. Shurling, A. L. Hatcher, C. S. Claxton, E. L. Stephens, W. C. Brinson, J. Roy Rowland, Emory Rowland, B. B. Blount, H. T. Hicks and J. F. Jackson.
Just who will be appointed to fill his unexpired term of Judge of the City Court will be up to Gov. Clifford Walker. Three applicants are B. B. Blount, A. L. Hatcher and W. C. Brinson.
Pvt. Otto Powell, son of Dr. T. A. Powell is now located in Haiti with the 54th Co., 2nd Reg. and is getting along very well. Mr. & Mrs. James I. Spell are moving to DeLand, Fla. The stock of the Drake grocery firm was sold to L. E. Parker.
Rain fell here in torrents almost all day and night Tuesday. Farming has a bad set back already and this rain has put them another week behind.
Mr. G. F. Dukes of the Georgia & Florida Railway was here floating the idea of a railroad connecting Wrightsville and Kite.
